The Value of Inspiration

Since joining PS three years ago, I have been involved in recruiting over 70 new staff members. Some of the many questions I’m asked repeatedly are “what PS means to me” and “how would I describe the culture?”. For both questions, one word comes to mind – Inspirational.

I found this article, “Why Inspiration Matters” by psychologist and author, Scott Barry Kaufman, from the Harvard Business Review, years ago. I believe it to be just as true, or even more true, today than the day I stumbled upon it. Kaufman says based on research spearheaded by psychologists Todd Thrash and Andrew Elliot, “Inspiration involves approach motivation, in which the individual strives to transmit, express, or actualize a new idea or vision. According to Thrash and Elliot, inspiration involves both being inspired by something and acting on that inspiration.” I agree with this sentiment, as Our employees inspire me and motivate me to strive to transmit new ideas as a result of that inspiration.

The PS culture is inspirational, especially in midst of challenges. Through a pandemic, the loss of three dear members of staff, and supply chain issues that continue to present unprecedented challenges and stress, I continue to be surrounded by thoughtful leadership who walk the talk, and staff, also leaders, who bring their whole selves to work each day while making a difference in the lives of others.

Among preparation or work mastery, openness, and an approach-oriented attitude, Kaufman describes another source of inspiration. “Another essential and often overlooked spark for inspiration is exposure to inspiring managers, role models, and heroes. ” I would definitely agree that exposure to role models and heroes generate inspiration – my heroes day in and day out are the PS employees.

My hope is that all of our employees truly feel that their role has real meaning. It has been proven that inspiration leads to creativity; and each employee plays their part here at PS in creating an environment where people can flourish, speak openly, feel supported, and have a job that serves their life!
