“Hello everyone, welcome to another BENLightenment video series. My name is Ben Harris, president with Production Solutions, and our intention with this video series is bring you fresh insights and inspirations so that you can bring and be your best self at work and in life each and every day.
So let’s dive into the topic of this video series. The topic, and title, for this video series is called VUCAFIED. We’re going to bring you 10 tips throughout the series on how to thrive in a VUCAFIED world.
So what is VUCA? VUCA stands for: volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. And it’s really a great acronym to describe everything that’s going on in our lives, or business, or world.
And it’s a term that was adopted and really sort of introduced by the US Army in the early 90s, used to explain and begin to use it as a framework for how to plan for globalization in the rapid advances, the internet, and since then, it has been adopted as a progressive, very popular business term. Many books have been written about it, lots of articles, lots of recommendations to actually look at your business and instead of a SWOT analysis, do a VUCA analysis, so we thought this was a great way to bring a new framework to you that talks about what we’re going through and living through as human beings today, which is this VUCAFIED state.
We’re going to dive into each one of the categories and then in the subsequent videos we’re going to give you two clips right now before we do so, I recommend as always, get yourself a journal or notebook, and pen or pencil, and take some notes and jot down some thoughts to yourself and really use this as a way to encapsulate some of your thoughts and knowledge for what we’re sharing with you today.
Editing is cutting out something small each and every day in your life that may not be serving you anymore in this VUCAFIED state.
For example, one of the things that I’ve been working on is taking in less coffee and caffeine, and a lot more water so keeping my hydration up starting with water first thing in the morning holding off on my coffee till mid morning really limiting myself to a cup or two a day really to help avoid the afternoon crash good for the immune system real easy to do, I just edited so that I can add.
Another example is just editing maybe a little bit of TV watching or social media or sort of rabbit holing, so that you can get to bed 20 minutes earlier each night, maybe you can get up a little bit earlier, have a better start to the day, do some journaling, do some meditation, so editing a little bit to add a little bit is key. So look at where you might be able to do that in your life and just start to be intentional – that is tip number one.
It’s really important throughout this video series and just in general, that you recognize and hopefully you have by now, that this VUCAFIED state that we’re in as human beings is not going to change the foreseeable future. So it’s starting to really come to a place of acceptance. Maybe stop judging yourself for not being able to keep up or not feel like you’re effective and all that’s required of you both in work and in life, and just start to say hey, I can do this!
We have, as a human species, an innate ability to adapt to change. It is part of who we are, as part of the amazing things about the human species that have brought us so far in terms of evolution. So starting to trust yourself more, and your innate ability to adapt to change. You will change, you will evolve, you will adapt. The Intention around that, and more trust in yourself and in your abilities with less judgement, is going to be really key.
The Action piece, we’ve talked about in the previous video series, just starting to get actively engaged, whether it’s different types of blogs, listening to podcasts, maybe a book, there’s some great books on VUCA. But really starting to understand and maybe look at, what’s going to be happening in future what are people predicting what are some of the signs showing starting to reach outside your typical Network in terms of your content sources or your inspiration sources, and look for some people who are really excited, and trying to create opportunity with all the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity that’s happening. They are out there, there’s a lot of people who can help inspire you and that’s really key right now that you’re feeding yourself new insights, new information and starting to see that you actually can adapt and grow, and be effective. I’m not saying it’s easy, but that intention and action a little bit each day to be able to move yourself into new ways of thinking, being, and really skilling, is key to being able to thrive in a VUCAFIED world.
We hope those 2 tips were good. And until next time, be well, be inspired and believe that life happens for us. See you soon.”
