Michelle’s Mailbox is a recurring industry snapshot of real direct mail fundraising packages currently arriving in actual mailboxes, highlighting format testing, premium strategy, and print production innovation across nonprofit and commercial campaigns.

Innovation in direct mail doesn’t always require creating something entirely new.

The September edition of Michelle’s Mailbox looks at familiar formats, components and techniques—and some of the different jobs they can do within a fundraising mail program.

This month, Michelle Johnston, Senior Manager of Strategic Development at Production Solutions, explores how individual components can work harder and how relatively small production choices can change the experience of a mailpiece.

Among the September observations:

  • A calendar premium that creates a natural connection to a monthly giving message.
  • A donor journey that begins with a social media acquisition offer and continues through direct mail, premium fulfillment and welcome communications.
  • Folded formats that create significantly more storytelling space without requiring a larger outer package.
  • Small production details, including a creative approach to an indicia area and the use of flood tints to recreate the appearance of colored stock.
  • Several examples of certificates, illustrating how a long-standing direct mail technique can be personalized, interactive or used to move a donor from recognition toward greater involvement.
  • This month’s featured postcard, self-mailer and premium.

A common thread runs through many of the examples: sometimes the opportunity isn’t adding another component. It’s considering what an existing component might do differently.

And there’s more coming in October

Fans of Michelle’s Mailbox can take the conversation further during Scary Good Ideas from Michelle’s Mailbox: Part 2, a special Halloween-themed webinar on October 29, 2026 at 1:00 PM ET.
Michelle will return for another look inside the mailbox, sharing more direct mail examples, observations and ideas drawn from the hundreds of nonprofit mailpieces that cross her desk.

Social:

Sometimes innovation in direct mail isn’t about finding something new. It’s about looking at something familiar differently.

That’s probably my biggest takeaway from the September edition of Michelle’s Mailbox.

This month I’m looking at a calendar that does more than serve as a premium, a donor journey that moves from social media into physical mail, folds that create more storytelling space, small production details that caught my attention—and a surprisingly large collection of certificates.

Yes, certificates. They’re still showing up, and organizations are using them in some interesting ways.
